“The
support provided by the Fund for the Arts enables Actors
Theatre to fulfill its mission —provide insight into
the human experience through live theatre that invigorates
minds and emotions…”
Actors Theatre of Louisville, the State Theatre of Kentucky,
was founded in 1964 with the merger of two theatre companies,
Actors, Inc. and Theatre Louisville.
Exploding
from its original 100-seat domicile to a 350-seat theatre
in an abandoned railroad station on the Ohio River, the
theatre moved to its current home on Main Street in 1972.
In 1976, the theatre started the internationally celebrated
Humana Festival of New American Plays, an annual showcase
of new theatrical work that draws theatre-lovers, critics,
producers and playwrights from around the world.
Actors
has produced over 300 Humana Festival plays representing
the works of some 190 playwrights. Festival plays have received
three Pulitzer Prizes, six American Theatre Critics Association
Awards, five Susan Smith Blackburn Prizes and four Obie
Awards. Forty-six of the plays have been produced in New
York and ten have been made into major movies or adapted
for television. Actors Theatre of Louisville has received the most prestigious awards
given to regional theatres: the Margo Jones Award, the Shubert
Foundation’s James N. Vaughn Memorial Award and the
Special Tony Award for outstanding non-profit resident theatre.
Acclaimed
for its artistic programming and business acumen, the theatre
presents nearly 600 performances of 25 productions during its August to May season composed of a diverse array of contemporary
and classical stage fare. It boasts a large local and regional audience and logs an annual attendance od over 200,000. Actors is also known for its outstanding educational programs that cultivate new generations of theatre-lovers and nurture an appreciation for the art form. Many established actors
began their careers at Actors, including Kathy Bates, Kevin
Bacon and Michael Gross.
