"Kentucky Opera is proud to be one of the oldest member agencies of the Fund for the Arts. For over fifty years, the Fund's financial contributions have provided Kentucky Opera with resources to grow and prosper as the Commonwealth's official opera company and a nationally recognized regional company that consistently produces opera of the highest quality for its mainstage and touring productions.

As the single largest contributor to Kentucky Opera, financial support from the Fund for the Arts has assisted the company in creating a variety of education programs that reach over 25,000 Kentucky students per year and are designed to engage those students on a long-term basis..."

Kentucky Opera was founded in 1952 by Moritz von Bomhard and designated the State Opera of Kentucky in 1982. In the 1950's, five operas were commissioned by Kentucky Opera and given their world premieres. Upon Bomhard's retirement in 1982, Thompson Smillie was named General Director. He led the organization for fourteen seasons. In 1997, Deborah Sandler was named General Director. The current Gineral Director is David Roth, who joined the Opera in 2006.

Last year, Kentucky Opera's education and outreach programs reached over 25,000 people in Kentucky. OperaWorks, The VISIONS program, Opera Puppet Theater, The Kentucky Opera's Young Artists' Program, Lunch & Listen and Sights & Sounds at the Speed Museum are the core of Kentucky Opera's education and outreach initiative. From its humble beginnings 54 years ago when a budget of $10,000 produced three operas, Kentucky Opera has grown to a respected regional company with an annual budget in excess of $2 million. With expansion plans for its education programs and the continued improvement to production quality, the company is well positioned to take its place as a regional and national leader in the field of opera.
