FUND FOR THE ARTS AWARDS DISTINGUISHED WHITTENBERG SCHOLARSHIP TO LOCAL STUDENTS

The Whittenberg Committee bestows the prestigious Whittenberg Scholarship to two talented Louisville students pursuing the performing arts

Louisville, KY — The Fund for the Arts announced that dancer McKinley Nicoson and flutist Heather Zinninger are the two winners of this year's Whittenberg Scholarship. Established in 1987 by Joan Whittenberg, the William Tolbert Whittenberg Scholarship for Excellence was designed to enable gifted students an opportunity to pursue advanced study or a professional career in the performing arts. “I continue to be awed by the talent, compassion, and dedication of these young students of the performing arts,” stated Joan Whittenberg. “They deserve to be recognized and helped.”

Of the ten finalists chosen to audition for the scholarship, two talented Louisville students were honored with the Whittenberg Scholarship. Dancer McKinley Nicoson was granted $3,000 to be used for a summer study at the Chautauqua Institution. McKinley has studied dance for eight years and currently studies under Chuck Bronson and Cynthia Bronner at the University of Louisville Dance Academy. In addition, she has performed with the School of American Ballet and the Walnut Hill School for the Arts.

Flutist Heather Zinninger was awarded $1,500 to be used for tuition at the esteemed Eastman School of Music. After attending the Youth Performing Arts School in Louisville , Kentucky and the Interlochen Arts Academy, she has just completed her first year at the Eastman School of Music. Her accomplishments include being the principal flute in the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, winner of both the Louisville Youth Orchestra and the Louisville Orchestra concerto competitions, and recipient of the Emerson Scholarship for the Interlochen Arts Camp.

“Both students stood out as rising stars among the ten finalists,” stated Don Scott Carpenter, Artistic/Executive Director of the Louisville Youth Choir and member of the Whittenberg judging committee. “Their talent and devotion to the performing arts is representative of the true excellence associated with the Whittenberg Scholarship.”

The Fund for the Arts coordinates the Whittenberg Scholarship process. Given each year, the amount of the Whittenberg Scholarship can range from $2,000 to $5,000. “I want to thank the Fund for the Arts and the judges for their participation. I only wish I could do more,” said Joan Whittenberg.
