FOR THE ARTS AWARDS DISTINGUISHED WHITTENBERG SCHOLARSHIP
TO LOCAL STUDENTS
The
Whittenberg Committee bestows the prestigious Whittenberg
Scholarship to two talented Louisville students pursuing
the performing arts
Louisville, KY —
The Fund for the Arts announced that dancer McKinley Nicoson
and flutist Heather Zinninger are the two winners of this
year's Whittenberg Scholarship. Established in 1987 by Joan
Whittenberg, the William Tolbert Whittenberg Scholarship
for Excellence was designed to enable gifted students an
opportunity to pursue advanced study or a professional career
in the performing arts. “I continue to be awed by the talent,
compassion, and dedication of these young students of the
performing arts,” stated Joan Whittenberg. “They deserve
to be recognized and helped.”
Of the ten finalists
chosen to audition for the scholarship, two talented Louisville
students were honored with the Whittenberg Scholarship.
Dancer McKinley Nicoson was granted $3,000 to be used for
a summer study at the Chautauqua Institution. McKinley has
studied dance for eight years and currently studies under
Chuck Bronson and Cynthia Bronner at the University of Louisville
Dance Academy. In addition, she has performed with the School
of American Ballet and the Walnut Hill School for the Arts.
Flutist Heather Zinninger
was awarded $1,500 to be used for tuition at the esteemed
Eastman School of Music. After attending the Youth Performing
Arts School in Louisville , Kentucky and the Interlochen
Arts Academy, she has just completed her first year at the
Eastman School of Music. Her accomplishments include being
the principal flute in the World Youth Symphony Orchestra,
winner of both the Louisville Youth Orchestra and the Louisville
Orchestra concerto competitions, and recipient of the Emerson
Scholarship for the Interlochen Arts Camp.
“Both students stood
out as rising stars among the ten finalists,” stated Don
Scott Carpenter, Artistic/Executive Director of the Louisville
Youth Choir and member of the Whittenberg judging committee.
“Their talent and devotion to the performing arts is representative
of the true excellence associated with the Whittenberg Scholarship.”
The Fund for the
Arts coordinates the Whittenberg Scholarship process. Given
each year, the amount of the Whittenberg Scholarship can
range from $2,000 to $5,000. “I want to thank the Fund for
the Arts and the judges for their participation. I only
wish I could do more,” said Joan Whittenberg.
