Fund
for the Arts Announces 2003 Whittenberg Scholarship Award
The Fund for the Arts announces the 2003
recipient of the William Tolbert Whittenberg Fund for Excellence
Scholarship. On May 29th, the scholarship committee selected
Edward Allen Heavrin of Louisville as this year’s
award winner. Edward is a 2002 graduate of DuPont Manual
High School/Youth Performing Arts School and has just completed
his freshman year as a Vocal Music Performance major at
the University of Kentucky. Mr. Heavrin will be using the
scholarship monies to attend the Opera Theater and Music
Festival of Lucca, Italy. This extensive five-week summer
training program is sponsored by the Cincinnati Conservatory
of Music.
Students participating in the Lucca Festival
will enjoy the opportunity of being immersed in Italian
culture while undertaking intensive study of Italian language,
opera theater and vocal technique. The culmination of the
Festival studies will be a fully-staged student performance
of Dominick Argento's, Casanova's Homecoming.
Edward has performed on several occasions
as a chorus member in productions by the Kentucky Opera,
as well as performing lead roles in musicals by the Youth
Performing Arts School. He is a student of Dr. Stephen King
at the University of Kentucky.
The Whittenberg Scholarship for Excellence
was established in 1987 as a vision of Mr. and Mrs. William
T. Whittenberg to enable gifted students to pursue advanced
study in the performing arts. Applicants must be residents
of the Kentuckiana region, between the ages of 16 and 20,
with plans to pursue a professional career in the performing
arts.

included Jennifer Ancuri, theatre, Joshua Ford, dance, Eric
Kinny, piano, Mallory Mann, dance, Greg Monsma, voice, Michelle
Oppel, dance, Liam Toner, theatre, Martha Ann Underhill,
dance, Sara Vize, voice and Matthew Zeckner, saxophone.
Applications for the 2004 Whittenberg Scholarship
will be accepted beginning in January, 2004. Applications
